Three Valley Gap Avalanche Towers
2016-18 – Revelstoke, BC
Client: BC Ministry of Transportation
Project Scope
The Trans Canada Highway below Three Valley Gap is a pinch point for avalanche hazards. This area has plagued BC MOT and motorists caught in unscheduled road closures; sometimes for many hours. A solution was needed for this troublesome transportation corridor.
Methods and Solution
Tangiers was contracted to install 11 Remote Avalanche Control Systems. This area proved to be an extremely technical worksite with both steep mountainous terrain while facilitating traffic flow as construction proceeded. Roped access and fall protection systems were needed. Helicopters were the only way to access this area and to move equipment and materials from point to point across precipitous terrain. Two Helicopter landing pads and four equipment pads were built to support the project.
Results
These systems were installed without issue. All anchors and foundations passed a rigorous engineering proof test. As a result, unscheduled road closures have been significantly reduced. This has been a positive impact not only in reduced closures, but also in multi million dollar saving for the department of transportation.
