Ghost Dam Geotechnical Investigation
2020 – Cochrane, Alberta
Client: TransAlta and the Province of Alberta
Project Scope
The geotechnical drilling company required that core samples be taken from areas that were situated on steep terrain and close to the water line of the dam. Being so close to the water, there was a high level of environmental concerns with the construction.
Methods and Solution
Tangiers was hired to build five Everest Class Drilling Pads to accommodate the needed tracked drill systems. The team accessed the area and built the pads in record time. There was a tight timeframe for project completion – after the local snowmelt but before the normal spring runoff. The ground was returned to its original condition after the pads were removed from the area.
Results
The Geotechnical investigation was completed within the time slot with no environmental issues. The information gathered from these normally inaccessible areas was critical in the decision making process for the engineers responsible for the dam.
