Canmore has a deep history of mining in the area. Due to urban expansion subdivisions have been built over these tunnel systems. Changing water levels and subsidence has causes sinkholes to appear. Some have created public hazards.
Methods and Solution
Tangiers was contracted to mitigate an especially problematic sinkhole that appeared across a bike path. Safety measures were put in place and the site was excavated. A special three-layer horizontal barrier was anchored into the ground that sealed off the sinkhole. Scientific measuring devices were installed to monitor further subterranean movement. The area was remediated and the pathway restored to its original condition.
The sinkhole hazard was eliminated. This was well received by the local residence who had lived with the issue and eyesore for years.
