Britannia Creek Debris Flow Barrier
2018 – Squamish, BC
Client: Town of Britannia Creek
Project Scope
The coastal town of Britannia is situated on an alluvial fan. The creek posed a great threat to housing and infrastructures during flood season. A solution to mitigate this hazard was given high priority. It was decided that a debris flow barrier would provide the answer. The barrier, unfortunately, needed to be installed inside a pristine canyon, which granted limited access.
Methods and Solution
Tangiers was given the task of installing the barrier with minimal to no environmental impact. Using our unique construction techniques we were able to drill the 30 x 7 meter deep bore holes in the canyon walls without needing to run any internal combustion engines within the river basin area.
Results
The tallest and widest clear span debris flow barrier in North America now sits in the canyon above Britannia. Completed on time and on budget.
